Defence Personnel, veterans and their families in Surf Coast, Bellarine, Geelong and Golden Plains are set to receive better access to support through the establishment of a brand new Veterans’ and Families’ Hub, following consultation with the local community today.

Federal Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Hon Matt Keogh MP and State Minister for Veterans, Hon Natalie Suleyman MP were in Charlemont with local Federal MP Libby Coker today to meet with representatives of the local community, veteran support organisations, Councils and other key stakeholders to discuss how the $5 million Hub could best meet the needs of defence personnel, veterans and their families.

“We don’t want to be taking a cookie cutter approach to the Hubs around the country. Every community is different and we want to ensure the Hub here meets the needs of local defence personnel, veterans and families for generations to come,” Minister Keogh said.

“There are almost 3500 personnel and veterans who live in the electorate of Corangamite with their families.”

“We need to provide them with the most appropriate services and supports to suit them.”

Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker said her community has a proud military history and the development of a new Hub focusing on the specific needs of local defence personnel, veterans and their families was a wonderful addition for the local community.

“Our community is unique and the Hub will reflect that. This consultation process will ensure the new Hub is fit for purpose, providing access to services and support for the veteran community close to home.” Ms Coker said.

The new Hub, to be developed in the region, forms part of the Australian Government’s $46.7 million commitment to more than double the size of the Veterans’ and Families’ Hub network across the nation.

The Hubs will provide tailored services, including those that support transition to civilian life, advocacy services and social connectedness, physical and mental health services, and a range of community activities, including volunteer and sporting opportunities.
