FUNDING PROGRAM TO MAKE OUR ROADS SAFER

Safety of local roads and the improvement of dangerous intersections will be at the centre of a funding program, federal member Libby Coker said today.

The Member for Corangamite Ms Coker said there are several local roads that community members had flagged as being very dangerous, including the intersection of the Bellarine Highway and Melaluka Road.
Community members had also mentioned the adjacent vehicle entrance at the Leopold Reserve; Ms Coker is urging community members and local councils to make submissions.

“It is really urgent that we act, we don’t want to see a fatality at this intersection, or any other,”
“So, if you have a concern about a local road, please take the time to nominate the road for funding through the Black Spot Program,” said Ms Coker.

Prior to the election, Ms Coker had formed a working group with members of the community to identify the location and was confident that the funding package would bring to light other unsafe intersections.

The Federal Government allocates $110 million per year to the ‘Black Spot Program’ which targets road locations where there is a high risk of accidents.

The program funds safety measures such as traffic lights and roundabouts and has played a significant role in reducing serious injuries and deaths on Australia’s roads.

Nominations for Black Spot locations are invited from state governments, local councils, community groups and associations as well as individuals.

A Consultative Panel will consider and recommend projects for approval.
