Supporters, members and players at the Portarlington Football Netball Club and the Portarlington Cricket Club can now keep up with all the latest action, thanks to new scoreboards at the recreation reserve for the football ground and netball courts.

With funding from the Australian Government and delivered by the City of Greater Geelong, the scoreboard upgrades deliver on the first stage of a $3.75 million project also supported by the Victorian Government to redevelop the Portarlington Recreation Reserve.

Federal Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker, joined with Mayor Trent Sullivan from the City of Greater Geelong and members of the Portarlington Football Netball Club to see the new scoreboards in action.

Ms Coker said the redevelopment of the recreation reserve is a game-changer for Portarlington, and emphasised the important role sporting clubs play in bringing communities together.

“What an amazing outcome for local sports clubs and the community,” Ms Coker said.

“The Portarlington FNC is a foundation club in the Bellarine Football Netball League, and with more and more young people moving into the area, well-resourced sporting facilities become more and more important.”

“I’d like to thank the club and the community for their ongoing advocacy to secure this much-needed upgrade, and I look forward to continuing our work together as we progress the next stages of the project.”

Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan thanked the Australian and Victorian Governments for their support of improvements at the reserve.

“Portarlington Recreation Reserve is such a focal point for the local community and the upgrades being made will help keep it that way into the future,” Mayor Sullivan said.

“The new scoreboard is fantastic and we’re excited by what’s to come.”

Design work on the remaining upgrades to the reserve, including the entry and car park, are continuing with construction expected over the coming summer period. The detailed design for the main pavilion change room upgrade is now complete and will soon go to tender.
